Pentagon Hazardous Material Response Facility

Alexandria, VA · Heffron Project Manager: Tom Sullivan · Completed November 2011

Heffron was selected by The Christman Company and the Department of Defense to deliver the design-build mechanical scope for the Hazardous Material Response Facility (HMRF) on the Pentagon Reservation — a purpose-built home for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, charged with safeguarding the Pentagon and other defense facilities across the National Capital Region.

Working alongside Atlanta-based MEP engineer Newcomb & Boyd, Tom Sullivan and the Heffron team sized HVAC systems to the owner’s performance requirements and to the LEED Silver targets that shaped the project. High-efficiency air handlers, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and a centralized building management system were among the key contributions that supported U.S. Green Building Council certification.

For the BSL3 lab exhaust system, Heffron installed a custom Ingenia rooftop air handler equipped with M98 bag-in / bag-out filtration. A second custom Daikin McQuay rooftop unit was installed to serve the office areas inside the HMRF.

The site’s proximity to Ronald Reagan National Airport added an uncommon coordination layer: every rigging operation had to be choreographed with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, with crane height capped at 110 vertical feet to stay clear of active flight paths.
